The Turbocharger (or Turbo) on your Jaguar's engine is a device that increases the power and efficiency of the engine. A turbine inside is spun by the exhaust gases passing through, and a compressor wheel attached to the other end of the turbine draws in air and forces denser compressed air into the combustion chamber for more power. The Turbo is built to a very precise and exact specification. The turbine spins at around 150,000RPM (context: the jet turbine engines on a 737 spin at around 3600RPM). If the turbine is out of balance, or the seals have worn due to poor maintenance or poor quality oil, the Turbo will require replacing. A failed Turbo will suddenly create a lot of smoke from the exhaust and a loss of power. If the turbo fails catastrophically during operation, the metal shards will be drawn into the engine causing severe damage throughout that may be an uneconomical repair on older vehicles.
