The Timing Cover Oil Seal is a flexible radial oil seal that sits in the Timing cover and allows a rotating shaft to pass through, and seal it against oil leakage. Over time, the seal could become damaged by debris or age, and engine oil can seep past under pressure. You may notice a smell of warm fumes if this oil is leaking down the front of the engine, or it looks like it has an oil leak coming from the front. These seals should be replaced as a matter of course any time the Timing Cover is removed for example when servicing the Timing Chain on your Jaguar. Have your Jaguar checked over for leaks by a competent person who will clean the engine properly and run it to see where the leaks are coming from.
