Your Jaguar has Rack and Pinion Steering. At either end of the steering rack is a flexible boot, or gaiter, to allow the tie rods to slide in and out as you turn the steering wheel. The integrity of these gaiters on your Jaguar is important, because the steering rack is positioned inevitably in a position that is exposed to the elements, and to the wet, dirt and debris that strikes it during normal usage on the road. A properly fitted, uncompromised gaiter will prevent this dirt and debris getting into the inner workings of the rack causing wear to the components inside, and prevent water getting in, and the grease inside getting out. Damage here will adversely affect the feel of your steering, and will lead to more play in the steering too. A split or missing gaiter on your Jaguar's steering rack will usually lead to an MOT fail in the UK.
