The Driveshafts on your Jaguar are the mechanical link between the transmission and the driven wheels. Driveshafts are made up of three parts: the inner and outer joints, and a solid connecting shaft. The driveshafts transmit the rotational forces from the transmission to the wheels. The joints in the driveshaft allow the drive to be transmitted to the wheels at a constant velocity, throughout the full range of movement of the steering input and suspension travel. The driveshaft joints are protected by flexible rubber 'boots' that keep the grease inside the joint and prevent ingress of water and debris. Worn or split boots should be replaced as soon as possible to protect the joints from wear, and worn joints will need to be replaced too. These are serviceable items, and the integrity of these are inspected annually during the MOT test, and during periodical service inspections. If you notice any clicking or crunching noises as you pull away with the steering on lock, or suddenly your Jaguar doesn't want to move despite being in gear, have it inspected by a competent person and have any required repairs carried out as soon as possible.
