The Timing Chain does the same work as a Timing Belt, but is generally not a service item, and lasts much longer. Often, with correct maintenance and servicing, the chain will never require replacement. Over time, chains can stretch and wear, and if you notice any rattling noises emanating from the Timing Cover area at the front of your Jaguar's engine, you should have it checked over by a competent person who can check the tension of the chain to see if it is worn to the point that replacement is required.
